Five to Know Before You Go - August 27, 2010

.

It will be a weekend full of pleasant surprises and resulting frustrations for film lovers this weekend. Some truly unique movies are coming out from some one-of-a-kind directors, but they might be tough to find in theaters near you. Also out this weekend, plenty of wide releases in varying genres. There’s, “The Last Exorcism”, “Takers”, and Neil Marshall’s highly stylized pursuit film, “Centurion”. Read on to discover the rest of your options at the box office this weekend.

Script Bits - Monster Hunters and Bathroom Attendants

.

Screenwriter Dante Harper’s script adaptation from the 2004 Japanese novel, “All You Need Is Kill” now has a director attached. Doug Liman will direct from Harper’s script, which sticks closely to the plot of the book, in which a soldier in a futuristic war against aliens wakes up at the exact same moment in time every time he dies. Much like a higher concept, “Groundhog Day”, the film will show what happens as the solider becomes more skilled every time he is given another chance at life.

Seven to Know Before You Go - August 20th, 2010

.

It’s a big weekend for wide releases. There’s retro horror “Piranha 3D”, conception comedy “The Switch”, romance spoof “Vampires Suck”, children’s sequel “Nanny McPhee Returns”, and comedy “Lottery Ticket”. Despite the large number of big studio releases, there are still plenty of indie and alternative choices at box offices this weekend.

Seven to Know Before You Go - August 13th, 2010

It’s an action-packed weekend with the release of, “The Expendables” and, “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”. The memoir adaptation, “Eat, Pray, Love” starring Julia Roberts is also out. In the face of such fierce competition, there are only seven indies out this week as alternate choices, but they do offer a wide array of genres to choose from.

Out this week is the action comedy, “The Other Guys” as well as the 3D dance film, “Step Up 3D”. (Don’t count the second one out, the first two have been big box office earners.) But what else is out this weekend? Quite a bit actually, in the first sign of a fall film surge, you have ten alternative choices at the box office this weekend, and more if you live in a larger market. (Chicago, New York, L.A.)

Script Bits - Dark Comedies and Dramedies

.

This week's Script Bits brings news of adaptations, remakes, and some sad news in the world of screen writing, as one famed writer from the action genre has passed away.

Screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada) is writing a romantic drama for super-producers Orci and Kurtzman that will be released via Dreamworks. The story will revolve around love affairs and breakups amidst a close knit circle of friends over a time span of several years. McKenna also wrote the upcoming film, “Morning Glory”.

Seven to Know Before You Go - July 30, 2010

.

Out this week is the romantic drama "Charlie St. Cloud", comedy "Dinner for Schmucks", and kids’ movie, “Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”. I can’t believe the studios found a way to make writers everywhere put that sentence down…anyway, there are seven more films at the box office this weekend that you need to know about. It’s a great weekend for indie and documentary lovers.
