Eight Movies to Know This Weekend

.

Out this weekend is action thriller, “SALT” along with kids’ movie, “Ramona and Beezus”. Here are eight more choices for you at the box office out this weekend.

Life During Wartime” is the sequel to director Todd Solondz’s film, “Happiness”. This film features an all-star cast of comedians and actors that give sometimes hilarious (and equally disturbing) deadpan comedy performances in this film about how a cynical family tries to work through a difficult past in order to get to a brighter future.

Countdown to Zero” is a frightening but uplifting documentary about the attempt of current world leaders to abolish all nuclear weapons. The film highlights the facts about which countries either have nuclear weapons, or have the capacity to create them at this moment in time. It also lays out hypothetical situations and historical events surrounding potential nuclear detonation.

The Shrine” is a horror film that chronicles the journey of three young journalists on the search for a missing colleague. When they travel to a remote Polish village in search of the story behind the missing man, they find themselves trapped by the same cult that captured, and possibly killed him.

Farewell” is a drama set during the height of the Cold War. When a French intelligence agent alerts the U.S. to a Soviet spy operation they’ve detected, it sets off a surprising chain of events that unravels several lives. It’s being called one of the best political thrillers in years.

Spoken Word” is an emotional family drama about a spoken word artist forced to return home to be with his dying father. But the artist has not been home in many years and once there, he begins to lose his grip on his identity and emotions as he falls deeper into family drama and old relationship issues with his father. He’ll have to dig deep to reemerge as the same man he was upon arrival, if that’s what he still wants when it's finally time to go.

Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist, and Rebel” is a documentary that takes a very close look at the iconic Hugh Hefner and reveals some surprises for younger audiences who only know him as the man from, “The Girls Next Door”. Hefner was integral as a civil rights activist and free speech activist as well as being a groundbreaking businessman. This film is fascinating and educational, as well as highly credible, directed by the Academy Award winning Brigitte Berman.

Jean Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child” is a documentary by someone who actually knew Jean Michel during his artistic prime in the eighties. Basquiat began as a graffiti artist but went on to an early and turbulent fame. He died young, and this film tells the story of how and why his art is still valued by the millions and sought after today.

Lucky” is an HBO documentary that follows the incredible phenomenon of the lottery and the people who have played and won. The consequences of winning the lottery are often less than satisfactory in the personal lives of winners, this film shows the way some of those consequences have played out.
