Eleven More Choices at the Box Office For You This Weekend

.

You’ve probably heard about Edge of Darkness (or read about it in the script report here on Tuesdays), Mel Gibson’s latest. Also out this weekend that’s been heavily advertised is the romantic comedy When in Rome. But there are eleven other releases without big studio budgets that you may want to know about, and they are…

44 Inch Chest stars John Hurt, Ray Winstone and Joanne Whalley in this tense drama. When a man, Colin, discovers his wife’s infidelities, his buddies decide to take matters into their own hands. They kidnap the wife’s lover and hold him captive, presenting Colin with the chance to regain his manhood by taking his revenge. Colin must wrestle with his desire for revenge as he weighs it against the love he has for his wife and the question of what it really means to be a man. This is a hard R for some violence, language and sexual references.

Falling Awake is the story of a young Latino musician struggling to break through to a wider audience. But breaking through to a wider audience will also mean breaking the confines of his restrictive neighborhood and protective family. When he meets a wealthy young woman who offers him the chance to do just that, he finds himself struggling between his many loves, family, culture, neighborhood, and most of all…his music.

The Shock Doctrine is a stylized documentary based on Naomi Klein’s book of the same name. The book and the documentary make shocking accusations and offer the proof to back them up using interviews and the favorite tool of the documentary, archival footage. The film follows the concept that the global economy, especially large governments and businesses, exploit the world’s most terrible moments of disaster. Specifically, the film posits that natural disasters become the best tools for profit in the free market policies of our modern world. As with most documentaries, you will most certainly learn something new and leave the theater talking. Never a bad thing.

Preacher’s Kid is a highly allegorical take on the parable of The Prodigal Son. When Angie King decides to leave her sheltered life as the preacher’s daughter for the first time, she joins up with a glamorous Gospel music tour. As Angie wrestles with life on the road and all that the outside world has to offer, her anxieties about returning home swell to a fevered pitch.

Hidden is a horror film that takes a unique look at the idea, “You can’t go home again.” After a long nineteen year absence from his home, Kai Koss must return after the death of his mother. But nothing is as it seems in his house, which now belongs to him, as he struggles with a haunted memory and a possibly haunted house.

Valhalla Rising is an action-adventure, and is quite possibly the first Viking film we’ve had in a good long while. So right there, based solely on my love of Vikings, you can’t count me in. Just kidding. (No, I’m not.) When a mute warrior and his ally escape imprisonment under an enemy chieftain, they may find that life on the road is more dangerous than their captivity.

Lake Mungo is a mystery with horror elements that centers on the unfortunate death of a young girl, Alice. After Alice’s death, an accidental drowning in Lake Mungo, her family begins to experience a series of unexplained phenomena in and around their home. When they decide to hire a psychic to assist them, they begin to uncover some uncomfortable truths about Alice that may lead them further into danger.

North Face is based on true events in 1936, when the Nazi government was looking to further its image in the eyes of the German people and the world. After two German climbers die in an attempt to climb the north face of the Eiger in the Swiss Alps, a Nazi official begins a search to assemble a team to finish the climb and save face. In the face of difficult and confusing politics, two young Germans who don’t consider themselves loyal to the Third Reich decide to answer the call for their own reasons, patriotism and the thrill of the climb. When they begin their arduous journey, they discover that a Swiss team is already underway and a race to the top ensues, with deadly consequences.

Saint John of Las Vegas stars Steve Buscemi as the titular saint. In this quirky drama, Buscemi takes a journey eerily similar to that of Dante in Dante’s Inferno as he makes his way back to Las Vegas under the mentorship of an independent insurance investigator

The Graves features two sisters on a journey to a small mining town. This horror film follows the tightly bonded duo through a series of supernatural dangers and unexpected consequences.

Dread is a horror film that follows an all-too adventurous philosophy student, Quaid. As Quaid prepares and conducts a series of cruel psychological experiments, exposing people to their worst fears, he finds that he may be paving the road to this greatest fear…an ax-wielding clown. Yeah, you heard me right. I get the feeling that if you’ve read this far down the list, you have a pretty good sense of what films are going to be a gamble and which ones will offer you some solid material. So take your pick and enjoy the movies this weekend.
