Five to Know Before You Go - A Weekend in Documentary Heaven

The summer movie season rolls on this weekend with the release of Pixar's “Cars 2” and the Cameron Diaz comedy “Bad Teacher”. But that's not all that's out. I cannot say enough about all of the amazing documenatries being released this weekend. There are also narrative films out, but these are the five you absolutely need to know about.

Conan O'Brien Can't Stop is the documentary that chronicled O'Brien's live tour in the wake of losing The Tonight Show. At turns cringingly awkward and painfully hilarious, this film gives fans what they wanted so desperately. To know what, and how, O'Brien was doing during this tumultuous time. True to form and title, the constant comedian literally doesn't stop. This is a can't miss for fans but will fascinate anyone, even O'Brien's detractors.

Turtle: The Incredible Journey is everything you want it to be. A gorgeously shot film that takes puts you in the shoes, er, fins, or a loggerhead sea turtle as it makes what has to be the world's single most incredible migration. Such a small animal will swim an entire sea, returning to it's birth beach sometimes decades later. This is a beautiful film. Think twice before you bring the kiddos, while the film is a wonder to watch, remember that most wildlife documentaries contain some pretty sad segments. But this is a documentary that anyone with a love of nature, or even beautiful footage, will enjoy. And hey, sometimes it's best to teach kids about the truths of life via the animal kingdom. Just be prepared for some serious talks about family pets on the way home.

General Orders No. 9 is stunning. It's unlike anything else you've ever seen. It's being called haunting and absorbing, bizarre and beautiful. It's a nature film...sort of. Full of poetry and art, this presents visuals and ideas to a viewer and let's them decide what it all means instead of providing direct narrations. By examining industrial life and normal city scenes and juxtaposing those with images of the natural world, this film may run some viewers out of patience. But for those who love to participate in the movies they watch, this may be one of the most satisfying theater experiences ever created.

Holy War is a necessary social experiment. It's a film that puts a radical Irish Muslim convert and a fundamentalist Christian preacher in a room together. Literally. Let me be cautious, I have not seen this film. It could be terribly biased. I don't know. But the premise alone is so pure and simple that I don't know why somebody didn't do it sooner. Watch two men put their lives in jeopardy for their faith over and over and over again and try to unravel for yourself one of the biggest mysteries of modern civilization. Why can't we stop fighting over religion? If you watch the preview, you're going to be too curious to resist seeing this film.

If A Tree Falls continues the pattern of exploration of radical idealists. The film follows the “Earth Liberation Front”, a domestic terrorist group that's number one on the FBI's most-wanted list. This film explains eco-terrorism in disturbing detail without oversimplifying the matter. It does what any good doc should do, it holds a mirror up to what's happening somewhere. As a viewer you will see both sides and come away with your own conclusions.
