Friday Movie Release Report - August 28, 2009

.

You know the drill by now, here are the movies you know about coming out this weekend: “Halloween II”, “Taking Woodstock”, and, “The Final Destination”. What follows are the movies you may not have heard of, including my pick of the week.

“We Live in Public” is a documentary all about a lavish and intricate party that also doubled as living art. If you like rich yuppies who can afford Donald Trumpian hijinks, enjoy…seriously, it does sound fascinating. (Just maybe in an occasional eye-rolling kind of way.) However, I have yet to see a documentary that I didn’t enjoy on at least one level. So I’ll bet that this one will be worth the price of admission.

“Mystery Team” wins this week’s award for “best title”. It’s a comedy with an R rating for sex, language, and drugs. So right away, half of you will love this and half of you will hate it before you ever see it. It’s about a group of friends who refuse to disband their childhood detective agency long after it ceases to be cute. I bet this is a coming of age flick, and those are usually charming. But with the warning about content, you may be in for an “American Pie” style romp. But with an indie, you never know…and the name alone earns it one viewing at least, right?

“Play the Game” is a sweet sounding PG-13 romantic comedy starring Andy Griffith. There are others, but Andy’s the only one that really matters. (I know you watch reruns of Matlock.) It’s a story about love, how to get love, how to date, what love really means, and lots of other pleasant romance related material. I know it’s hard to tell with me sometimes, but I’m not being sarcastic about wanting to see this one. I’ll definitely give it a chance.

“Still Walking” has already been heralded by critics from California to New York to Canada. It’s a family drama directed by Hirokazu Koreeda, and word on the street is that it’ll give you a major case of the warm fuzzies, but not in that “happy ending” kind of way. This one’s a thinker folks.

“The Open Road” is a drama/comedy written and directed by Michael Meredith and starring Mary Steenburgen (Oh good…), Jeff Bridges (Yes!), and Justin Timberlake (1980’s record stop noise). It’s a road picture about a father and son trying to re-connect under difficult circumstances. What zany troubles will they get into? What uncomfortable conversations will they have? Who can say? I’ll see it for you Jeff, but it’s only because I feel that we have a lasting and important relationship that I’m willing to take risks for.

“At the Edge of the World” is a documentary that is also listed in some places as an action adventure and a “David vs. Goliath” film. It’s about anti-whaling activists trying to stop Japanese whaling ships in the Ross Sea, against which they are vastly inferior. Can our heroes pull it off? I don’t know about you, but I think this mix of real life adversity + worthy cause + great genre makes this one a sure thing. P.S. It was also described as a “real life pirate tale”. Are you in yet? I am, it's my official pick of the week.

“Big Fan” sounds really interesting. It’s either going to really work or fail big, and right away that makes me want to see it immediately. Patton Oswalt, who is a great comic but usually ends up typecast as “simply adorable” in film roles, plays a slightly darker role this go ‘round. He’s a huge New York Giants fan who ends up in some kind of violent encounter with  a hero of his, the details of which are under wraps until you see the film. It’s listed as a comedy and it’s rated R.
