Indiana Jones Returns...Again

Indiana

Anyone feeling deflated about not being able to expect more Indiana Jones films can take comfort in the upcoming release of the first person game, “Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings”. If you’re anything like me, the release of a much anticipated movie can be followed by a couple of years of moping. For me, awaiting the fourth Indiana Jones movie was the pinnacle of anticipation. I honestly don’t think anything else will ever top the geeky build-up to that one.

While it’s true that “Star Trek” sufficiently blew my mind, it was more in the “pleasant surprise” category seeing as how I thought it was going to be terrible. (I’ve seen it six times in the theater…so far.) However, I didn’t experience that all-encompassing need to find news about it pre-release the way I do with some other summer blockbusters. I’m addicted to movies, and half the fun of that for me has always been reading up on the production as it happens.

So comparatively speaking, this summer has felt a touch anti-climactic without the presence of Indy. Strange I know, since most summers come and go without him. But the wind-up to the film was long and enjoyable. Now that an entire year has come and gone, I need something else in the, “Indy” genre to look forward to. “Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings” will do nicely.

LucasArts will finally be releasing the game in the United States on June 9th. England follows closely with a June 12th release. The game offers players a chance to act as Indy in locations like Panama and San Francisco’s Chinatown. The year of the adventure is 1939, placing Indy right back in his prime. Ah, the magic of gaming. Offering nerds like me respite from reality for years now.

I also find it interesting that the game developers chose to put Indy on a quest for yet another biblical relic, returning him to his roots. Last year’s, “Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” threw me for a loop (and that’s putting it lightly) with its science-fiction themed Macguffin. So the plot of this game will put me right back in my comfort zone.

By the way, there is an official Indiana Jones newsletter that you can sign up for at IndianaJones.com. I don’t know about you, but I’m just sentimental (geeky) enough to go sign up for it. For more information about the game specifically, visit http://www.lucasarts.com/games/indianajones/

Hey Audrey - you are indeed quite the Fan Girl.  I remember seeing the first Indy way back when and sneaking back in to the following showing.  But haven't kept up with it like you have!

Indy 5?

I bet this game will be better than Crystal Skull because it does go back to the original source type material with the Staff of Moses.  Crystal Skull could have worked, but maybe as a 2nd movie in a new trilogy.  But who knows maybe Crystal Skull will be seen as our Temple of Doom like you said earlier today.

Indiana Jones and The Crystal

Indiana Jones and The Crystal Skull was an unbelievable disappointment for anyone who enjoys quality cinema and who expected such from a Spielberg/Lucas effort.  All of my film friends agreed.

It was almost like it was "rushed through" and incorporating the "greatest technical (and other)  hits' from the other films; heads exploding, the vacuous warehouse scene at the beginning of the film, etc.

It just goes to show you that when you rely on visual special effects to override the quality of a good script, then the film suffers.  These guys made money from this film based more off of their reputations from the previous films  rather than taking time and thought to make "Crystal Skull" a quality film.
