Script Bits - Ballers, Little Red Riding Hood, and Screamers

.
Your inside track into what scripts are being bought, sold, and entering production.

1. David Leslie Johnson’s script for a much darker version of, “Little Red Riding Hood” is headed into production in the near future. The script, written for Warner Brothers, will center around a village haunted by a werewolf and will star Amanda Seyfried as the titular character. Most details are being kept under wraps, but “Twilight” director Catherine Hardwicke has been hired and the film will debut on March 11.

2. Corinne Kingsbury’s script, “31 Days of Larry” is currently seeking a director. The dark comedy centers around a suicidal man who agrees to marry a woman in dire financial straits so that she can inherit his life insurance, meaning he will do something worthwhile with his life before killing himself.

3. Matt Drake and Michael McCall’s treatment has now turned into a script for the upcoming film, “Project X”. Though details are being kept under wraps, minor plot spoilers have revealed that the film will revolve around a house party gone awry, filmed with a video camera from an attendee’s perspective a la “Cloverfield” and “Paranormal Activity”. The film will be cast entirely with unknowns.

4. The script for basketball pic, “Ballers” is headed into production, though a little bit later than originally scheduled. The script was written by Babaloo Mandel and Lowell Ganz and is now on hold because of schedule changes with the intended star, Lebron James. The film will now shoot this time next year.

5. Wes Craven’s horror franchise rides again when, “Scream 4” starts shooting this week in Michigan. Kevin Williamson wrote the script, no word on how “meta” it will go as it did in the sequels to the original in years past. (A la the movie within the movie.)

Last but not least, a significant piece of positive news regarding screenwriters. For the first time since the writer’s strike and the recent recession, screen and television writers have actually seen an average increase in their earnings. This is great news for working writers as well as aspiring writers.
