Children’s books, comic books, true stories, Comic-Con and an original horror anthology are headed to the big screen according to this week’s Script Bits.
Brett Ratner has acquired the rights to comic book, “The Unknowns” by Mark A. Altman through his shingle, Rat Entertainment. There is no announcement about a director or a writer at this time. Plot follows a woman who discovers that she was once a spy, but has since had her memory erased. She must discover who erased her memory and why.
FOX has tapped director Shawn Levy to produce a film version of the children’s book, “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”. The studio says it wants to turn the book into a “high concept family comedy”. Though it’s not for certain that Levy will direct, but will definitely be producing, Rob Lieber has been hired to pen the screenplay. The film will differ from the book in that it will feature an entire family collectively going through each of their worst days possible.
Alien comedy, “Paul” written and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost was a huge hit at Comic-Con despite the fact that it won’t debut until next year. The film is being called a “love letter” to fanboys and Comic-Con lovers everywhere and part of the film is set at the annual pop culture mega-fest. “The Green Hornet” also made an impressive bow at Comic-Con this year, it’s script getting high praise from die-hard fans.
Alain Michel-Blanc and Ismael Ferrouhki have penned a WWII script based on a true story titled, “Free Men”. Set in Paris, the pic stars an Algerian immigrant who strikes up an unlikely friendship with a Jewish man. This friendship inspires both men to join the resistance, despite the deadly threats from the Gestapo.
Carl Kirshner’s horror script, “The Gathering” is attracting genre heavyweights such as Robert Englund, currently in talks to star. The film is an anthology of horror stories. The framework has the devil bringing deceased famous authors such as Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley together on Halloween night in a competition to tell the most frightening story.

Paul
How cool? And I love Simon Pegg!
Me too!
It seems like between, "Paul" and Spurlock's documentary that filmed there this year, there will be some fun SDCC films coming out. Pegg said they couldn't film there b/c the fire marshall wouldn't allow it. But they recreated it pretty faithfully. That would be a great double bill with, "Galaxy Quest" at a theater somewhere.
