Encouraging news for those who love original works, we could be getting closer to more original material at the box office after the succesful release of, "Despicable Me". In addition, this week, many novels that may not initially seem like film material are lining up for adaptation.
1. Writer Ronan Bennett is adapting a screenplay from Seamus Deane’s novel, “Reading in the Dark”. Bennett also wrote, “Public Enemies”. The script follows the plot of the book which is a coming-of-age story about a young boy growing up in Derry in 1947.
2. A political thriller tentatively titled, “Unscrupulous” is headed to the big screen. The script will be an adaptation of the book, “The Ohio Gang” by Charles L. Mee, which is something of an expose on Warren Harding’s administration. Television producer Willaim Rabbe has optioned the book himself and though he says he plans to hire a writer, he wants to determine the story himself and is already working on “streamlining” the plot.
3. A new dramedy is headed into production. Peter Facinelli, who has gained major traction after appearing as a vampire in the, “Twilight” saga will star in a film that he also happened to write. The film is titled, “Loosies” and follows a pickpocket living a free and easy lifestyle until a one-night-stand shows up and announces that she is pregnant with his child. Michael Corrente is set to direct.
4. A feature film version of the John Perkins’ novel, “Confessions of an Economic Hit Man” will enter production soon. Though the writer and director are currently being kept secret, Phillipe Diaz, chairman of Cinema Libre, which is producing the film, says that he will reveal more details about the production very soon since they have just secured financing and have officially greenlit the film. The book is a true story, but it reads like a thriller. In it, Perkins divulges some heinous acts of financing he did on behalf of the U.S. Government to third world developing countries.
5. Screenwriting duo Will Block and Jake Emanuel have sold a pitch to Lorenzo Di Bonaventura to produce. Though details are being kept mostly under wraps, we know that the pitch is loosely based on, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” and is described as an action comedy.
6. Liz Azuelos is set to direct a remake of her own comedy, “LOL” from a script she wrote. The original film was a Gallic hit and this version will star Demi Moore as a mother to a teenager, played by Miley Cyrus, dumped by her more sexually experienced boyfriend. The film will highlight the accidentally funny situations that arise during times of emotional desperation.

For more original work being in development!
Very exciting, isn't it?
I hope that it gains momentum and becomes a trend. Everything is ruled by the dollar though, so we'll have to get out there and buy tickets for more original films to see it gain speed.
