There've been a wide array of screenplays bought, writers hired, and novels purchased for adaptation by studios. No matter the genre or style, if you're a writer you should most definitely keep writing. Who knows, someday you might be like the people below.
Writer Mark Bomback (“Unstoppable”, “Race to Witch Mountain”) was hired by Universal to write the screen adaptation of “The Art of Racing in the Rain”. The novel, written by Garth Stein, revolves around a dog and the family that owns him. Patrick Dempsey is set to star in the film.
Warner Bros acquired feature film rights to Kristine Barnett's memoir “Scattered Skills”. While the book isn't yet complete, the story follows Barnett's son as he develops into a genius at the age of eight. No screenwriter is yet attached, though I can't imagine with a story this interesting that Warners will have any trouble signing one.
Keary Taylor's novel “Eden” has been purchased by Kerry, Kimmel and Pollack. The independent production company will soon be looking for a screenwriter to adapt the dystopian story about a girl in a post-apocalyptic world.
Another book getting picked up is “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” by Laini Taylor. Universal Pictures bought the rights to the story of another teenage girl who is sent to collect human teeth by her father. There definitely seems to be a trend emerging in the post “Twilight” and “Harry Potter” phase of cinema. More and more fantasy and science fiction novels involving teenagers are getting snatched up. Dang, if only I'd self published my novel about vampire magician's full of teen angst.
Screenwriter Peter Prince is teaming up with director Stephen Frears to develop a remake of their 1984 British gangster movie, “The Hit”. This version will take place in America, but will have a similar plot. In the original two hit men are hired to extradite a gangster from Spain and bumble the whole job in the process.
Interesting projects on the way. I'm curious to see which of these novels will be successful produced. Stay tuned to this blog for more on all of these projects.
