You can always read the production trends by finding out what scripts are getting put into production and when. This week, adaptations continue to rule.
1. Marshall Curry's documentary, “Racing Dreams” has been picked up for feature film adaptation for Dreamworks. The dynamic duo Orci and Kurtzman will be producing, in the latest string of their many projects lining up after the wild success of, “Star Trek” last summer. More feature scripts are coming from documentaries, such as the wildly popular documentary, “King of Kong”, and, “Crazy Love”. So be prepared to see many doc to feature script news coming soon in what's sure to be a trend. When Orci and Kurtzman are producing, you can never count them out as writers until you hear otherwise...
2.Another adaptation in the works is, “Dark Life”, a script being written based on the novel of the same name by writer Kat Falls. No word on a writer yet, and chances are, The Gotham Group will wait to choose one until the books debuts this May. Likely, the success of the book in print will dictate the choice of writer and project budget, though Gotham is standing firm that it believes the book will be a success.
3.Rhidian Brook and first-time director Debs Gardner-Paterson have written a script together for Pathe titled, “Africa United”. The story follows three African youths who decide to run away and take a 3000 mile journey across the continent to be a part of the 2010 World Cup soccer tournament opening ceremonies. The film is not currently set to release in the U.S., but after Pathe's major success with, “Slumdog Millionaire”, they'll likely be eyeing a U.S. Release upon the completion of the film.
4. Byron Willinger and Phillip De Blasi have written a script titled, “The Commuter” with a story that centers around a man's deadly and action-packed commute to NYC. Gold Circle Films has snagged the rights and is looking toward a summer start-date for filming. Olatunde Osunsanmi is set to direct. (“The Fourth Kind”)
5. The script Robert Rodriguez and his editor, Ethan Maniquis wrote titled, “Machete” has been a finished film for quite some time. But a large-scale bidding war for distribution rights has also been on for quite some time...news broke on Sunday that Fox finally won.
