Seven to Know Before You Go - August 13th, 2010

 It’s an action-packed weekend with the release of, “The Expendables” and, “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”. The memoir adaptation, “Eat, Pray, Love” starring Julia Roberts is also out. In the face of such fierce competition, there are only seven indies out this week as alternate choices, but they do offer a wide array of genres to choose from.

 

1.       Tales from Earthsea” is an adaptation of a popular fantasy novel that spawned several sequels. The film stars a young sorcerer named Ged who recklessly unleashed a massive evil upon the world. In the film, he must tame the evil in order to repair his mistake and claim his rightful place as the world’s greatest sorcerer.

 

2.       La Soga” is the story of a policeman forced to work against the corrupt bureaucracy of his own government.

 

3.       Fruit Fly” is about a young woman who moves to San Francisco in order to workshop her latest performance art piece. The piece is all about the girl’s search for her long-lost mother, and upon moving to San Francisco, she begins to uncover clues about her mother’s whereabouts that lead to an unexpected meeting with new family members.

 

4.       Peepli Live” is the touching and artfully shot comedy about a poor farmer living in rural India. When his family faces hard times, and when he has exhausted all efforts to seek aid, it is suggested to him that he might be worth more dead than alive. When a reporter overhears a conversation between the man and his brother in a bar, it becomes front page news and every news outlet in the country picks up the story. Soon the country is waiting in anticipation, will he or won’t he?

 

5.       The Horde” is the French zombie film that has won raves at several film festivals. The story follows corrupt politicians and a rogue police force as they attempt to navigate and escape the walking dead.

 

6.       Mesrine: Killer Instinct” has been released before without the subtitle. It is the French film that continues the country’s latest wave of obsession with the American gangster genre. The film stars Vincent Cassel as France’s most notorious gangster.

 

7.       Animal Kingdom” is the Australian drama that’s received rave reviews. It follows a teenager forced to move in with unfamiliar relatives after the death of his mother. Upon arrival, he discovers that the family was estranged for a reason, as they are all involved on various levels with criminal activity. He must struggle to gain balance in the wake of his grief and escape his newfound family legacy.
