The Shark Is Still Working

A new “JAWS” documentary, “The Shark Is Still Working” will be playing  next at the San Francisco United Film Festival on June 12 and 13. The filmmakers are still tweaking the doc according to fan criticism. As announced on the film's official website, the version screening at the San Francisco United Film Festival will be shorter than the cut recently seen in LA.

If you're not a "JAWS" geek, the name of the documentary is in reference to an interview with Richard Dreyfuss in which he stated that the mechanical shark used in the film suffered near constant breakdowns. Because of this, those on set could hear frequent updates over the P.A. system such as, "The shark is not working."

The documentary began as a fairly modest endeavor and ended up gathering plenty of steam. The film is narrated by "JAWS" star, the now deceased Roy Scheider. It features interviews ranging from actors in the film, to prominent filmmakers affected by the film, all the way up to the former head of Universal Studios, Sid Sheinberg.

"JAWS" geeks have been following the making of the documentary since 2006. I can tell you that personally, because I've been one of them. "JAWS" is just one of those films that you can’t get enough of, and it's still one of the most effective thrillers/horror films available today. Impressive considering the lack of special effects technology available at the time. Though perhaps the physical effects used combined with Spielberg's raw talent and subject matter were what made the film so terrifying. That insatiable need for more details and commentary is what I’m hoping this doc can satisfy.

But I loved JAWS and think that it still holds up after all these years.  I'd love to see this doc.

Wow

This sounds so cool. Hope it goes into wider distribution and/or doesn't take long to hit DVD.

Agree with all of the above.

Agree with all of the above. Jaws is still a fantastic film and I'm sure the documentary will be fascinating.
