Six to Know Before You Go - Sept. 3, 2010

,

Out this weekend is, “Machete”, “Going the Distance”, and, “The American”. But as is the usual case, there are also several movies out that you may not have heard of at all. If you like spoofs, subtle comedies, or Chinese remakes of Coen Brothers movies...you're in luck.

A Woman, a Gun and a Noodle Shop is a remake of the 1985 Coen Brothers film, “Blood Simple”. This time, all the action and dark comedy revolve around a noodle shop in Chinese desert town. It is what happens when a man seeking revenge doesn't realize that he is also being plotted against.

Last Train Home is a documentary about what happens to a Chinese family over the course of several years as the parents leave their children in the care of others to earn more money as migrant workers. At it's center, the film has a statement to make about what happens when economic gain becomes the driving force behind a family or a country. The visuals will leave you stunned.

Prince of Broadway is a touching take on a sudden change in the life of a man making a great living selling knock-off products in New York City. When he is visited by an old girlfriend, who drops off a baby that she insists is his, he has to re-configure his entire life as he learns what it's like to be a parent. Shot in a documentary style and determined to portray realism, the film proposes unique questions about the idea of a real American dream and a knock off.

White Wedding is the tale of a South African wedding gone awry when the groom is stranded far away without any hope of getting to his wedding on time or communicating with his bride-to-be. It's a quirky comedy with a very talented cast. Rich with international flavor, but relatable for anyone who chooses to watch it. White Wedding looks like a no fail.

Suck is already being called a cult classic for it's slew of rock cameos and it's witty script. On the outset, it looks like just another vampire movie, but watch the trailer and you may find yourself intrigued. It's the story of what happens to a band with no following and even less talent, that find themselves with a new edge after being bitten.

The Winning Season stars Sam Rockwell as a high school basketball coach. It's a darker sassier version of the Mighty Ducks story structure. Any Sam Rockwell fan won't want to miss it, and any fans of indie comedy will want to catch it in theaters as well.
