Six Lesser Known Films to See This Weekend - February 26

.

Big releases this weekend include the Kevin Smith comedy, Cop Out and the R-rated remake of a George Romero horror film, The Crazies. But there are also a lot of indies out this weekend that you may not know about...

  1. Prodigal Sons is already widely known from its many festival screenings and awards. It's the documentary that follows Kimberly Reed, a transgendered woman, on a journey across the world to reconnect with family and friends. Reed has even appeared on Oprah.

  2. Formosa Betrayed is an R-rated police drama/mystery that tells the story of an FBI agent tracing a crime committed on American soil all the way back to Taiwan. The film follows the “stranger in a strange land” storyline as the detective must pursue his investigation in Taiwan where he finds himself surrounded by enemies involved in a complex conspiracy.

  3. Toe to Toe follows the intense storyline of a fragile friendship between two teenage girls at a Washington DC prep school. One black, one white, the girls have a short-lived fight over a boy they both like, which sets off racial tensions at the school in a way they never could've predicted. Soon, they have to find a way to come together for each other's sake and to stem the tide of pressure rising within the school.

  4. The Art of the Steal is a documentary that chronicles the danger facing one of America's great cultural institutions. The film chronicles the surprisingly volatile struggle over a priceless art collection owned by the Barnes Foundation. The foundation was created by Albert C. Barnes, who envisioned an educational institution that would stand as a permanent fixture in Philadelphia. Now, a group with invested interest has taken the foundation to court to attempt to gain control over the collection and move it for profit. It's a David and Goliath style battle.

  5. The Yellow Handkerchief stars William Hurt and Maria Bello in this moving drama about second chances. When a group of strangers meets on an unlikely road trip across post-Katrina Louisiana, they each must face a new and uncertain life ahead or decide to return to their previous lives and all the difficulties they contain.

  6. Defendor is an R-rated mix of drama and comedy that follows a psychiatric patient who believes he's a superhero. A teenager who becomes his friend and his psychiatrist are also along for the ride. We watch the difficulties (and good times) they must face by befriending this strange and troubled man.

But SHUTTER ISLAND still reigned at the box office.  CRAZIES might have legs.
