This holiday weekend sees the release of The Wolfman, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Lightning Thief, and Valentine's Day. What else is out?
A Prophet is an R-rated drama that features the collision of cultures and worlds in this French film. When a young Arab man ends up in a French prison, he finds himself undertaking an uncomfortable transformation working for the mafia during his incarceration. The film stirs up questions of culture, crime, and religion. It is, as we say in the nerd business, “a thinker”.
My Name Is Khan stars one of the most popular actors in the world, Bollywood sensation Shah Rukh Khan, in a drama. (But as I always say, Bollywood films are always a hybrid of multiple genres, so it's hard to put them into one category.) Khan plays a Muslim man from India currently residing in San Francisco. When he leaves on an unpredictable journey across the U.S., he finds that he inspires curiosity wherever he goes, sparking an accidental revolution of ideology and leaving a trail of debate in his wake.
Videocracy is a documentary that follows the results of a cultural experiment from thirty years ago that still has drastic consequences in Italy today. Filmmaker Erik Gandini chronicles the disturbing cultural obsession with the fame that Italian television can bring, and what some citizens of Italy (particularly some women) are willing to do to get it. Watch the TRAILER, it will have you absolutely mesmerized and astounded...I'd call this one a must-see for any documentary lovers.
October Country is a film often described using the word, “haunting”. It's a visually stunning snapshot of a small town and a deeply troubled family. This film has been called a, “transcendent” work. So the bar is high, but again, for documentary lovers, it looks like it's going to be a good few weeks at the box office. See the trailer HERE.
