History
Without a doubt, the most famous film awards are the Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars. The first Academy Awards took place in 1929, honoring films from 1927 and 1928. Interestingly, The Jazz Singer, the first film with sound won a special award that year as a “talkie.” It was not allowed to compete with the other silent films.
Now the Academy Awards take place in March or even in late February as they are being pushed up to make them more current with the release of the contending films in the previous calendar year.
There are a myriad of different film awards around the world, some awarded by critics, some awarded by industry members, and some awarded by fans. Generally, however, the film award ceremonies are restricted to this particular season of November to February.
