Traditionally for film, it refers to the first positive prints made by the laboratory from the negative photographed on the previous day.  In other words, it's the prior day's shoot available for viewing, and it applies whether the shoot was done on film or video.  Directors, producers, cinematographers, actors, and other cast and crew with a need to know are very interested in seeing how the dailies came out.
