In screenwriting, Nudges are simply postive or negative events which occur thoughout the script with the charge of having to bolster the protagonist's wish to push forward towards what he or she wants.

Usage

Nudges are often used immediately after the Hook to push the protagonist along toward making a concious decision to establish a goal. The simple reason being that sometimes the protagonist does not feel worthy enough to take the journey toward achieving his or her goal.

Nudges are also used to after a goal is established to further provide strength to the protagonist in achieving that goal.

Format

When outlining a screenplay, there is no real set amount of Nudges that should be used, only enough to push to the protagonist along. Too few Nudges present the protagonist as invulnerable which makes for an uninteresting film. Too many Nudges and the protagonist comes off as wishy-washy and the film borders on being slapstick.
