Scene Mechanics

Scene mechanics refer to the basic, yet strict directional components that make up a scene. Each component is afforded its own individual style, indentation, position and purpose so as distinguish itself from the other constituents in the scene. It is important that every screenwriter adhere to these directional guidelines or risk being dubbed a novelist.

These directional components that make up a scene are as follows:

  • Scene Heading
  • Action
  • Character
  • Dialog
  • Parenthetic
  • Transition

Let's investigate these components on an individual basis. Note the examples for each component share the exact same scene so as to be clear what position each component is in relation to the others.
