The ordering of a piece of visual media (i.e. "video") for private viewing, usually at a premium cost, to be viewed when the orderer wishes (on demand).

The video is ordered either through a set top box (via a cable company), or through the internet. The video is then either played back immediately in streaming video or is downloaded for immediate or future viewing.
