Hi there,
I'm not sure if this is the right place to start. So here is my story:
I'm basically a writer for geeky stuff like technical tutorials. I'm also very interested in producing animation movies in the SciFi and/or Humor genre (preferably both genres combined somehow). I already managed to direct and cut a short SciFi animation film with a lot of help from my team.
I'd like to learn (or improve) my writing skills since I did a lot of technical stuff in the past (and I'm not a native speaker of English). I wonder if screenwriting would be the right start or if I should focus more on learning generic story writing to improve my English and find my own style.
On the other hand, I believe it's easier to write dialogs than complete stories and I want to focus on screenplays anyway (movie or audio). I have a bunch of good ideas for SciFi episodes that I would like to realize somehow.
What's your opinion?
Marian
Hello Marian, I design embedded electronics (small computers) and my native language is not English, yet here I am working on my first script, meeting new interesting people and all in all having fun :)
So, the way I see it, just go ahead and do what you enjoy most.
I just read on some blog, "it doesn't matter WHAT you do, what matters is HOW you do it". I disagree. What matters the most is HOW YOU FEEL while you are doing it. If it makes you feel great, if you really enjoy it, just do it, don't let anyone tell you different :)
Well, that's at least what I think :)
If what you really want to do is write screenplays, then I encourage you to proceed! I recommend that you (1) find and read screenplays of movies you have liked, as well as some famous screenplays like CHINATOWN and other Oscar-winning screenplays (just google for "CHINATOWN screenplay"); (2) read a few of the books we recommend HERE, and (3) we tend to like our Screenwriting Basics Guide which you can find HERE. And we also think you'll pick up a few things by perusing our blog HERE, where we've been writing about the crafts of screenwriting and movie making for over a year.
By all means, jump on in!
