That was kind of a confusing name for the title of the thread, haha! What I mean is, I was thinking about all the script reports I've been posting lately, and they're full of sure bets. Comic movies, video game movies, remakes. People talk a lot about wanting more original stuff coming out to theaters, myself included.
If you could have any movie, genre of movie, original material hitting theaters, what would it be?
I like some original musical comedies. Can you even imagine?
personally i think writers should be more controversial and question sensitive subject areas, think along the lines of M Moore, but place the theme into a better story line with twists and surprises
From what I've seen and what I can think of off the top of my head, fantasy movies are either child-orientated or based off other matieral (eg Lord of the Rings, Narnia). As a fan I'd like to see more movies of this genre. I guess the problem is that it's not mainstream, and is "nerdy" I guess, but not long ago comic book films were in a similar boat.
Hey Phil, I definitely agree. Do you remember Ron Howard's, "Willow"? That was original material, I think. Fantasy without an intact fan base seems hard to sell, but I too would like to see more original fantasy.
and less Michael Bay. A return to the 70's with great, original stories, masterfully told.
Yes, that would be great! I can remember a time when kids movies like, "Land Before Time" and, "An American Tale" weren't afraid to really be about something. This latest installment of Toy Story really returned to that idea, as Pixar usually does. But it would be fun to have even more brands of this type of storytelling in a live-action format.
What I'm sort of sick of, and never liked really, are movies that take something like a comic or a TV show, then make a movie out of it. Not that I dislike this in itself, but when the original is child oriented, then the movie is adult oriented -- adding a love story, probably sexy outfits, maybe even adult situations, and of course, graphic violence. I hate that.
Or what I guess also happens is they take something that is easily associated with kids (like a comic book character) but might be more adult oriented in the original (e.g. Dark Knight) but then they market the crap out of it to young kids.
I guess of the things I would love to see made into movies, a good sci-fi movie written by somebody who realizes that aliens aren't real, and instead of trying to give them backstory, just uses them as a dramatic device to explore the human condition instead. That would be good :)
I confess that I'm looking forward to the film version of "The Forever War", but and prepared to be disappointed as I heard it's going to be in 3D. *sigh*
I would also love to see some of Tony Hillerman's novels made into big screen movies. I think one of them was made into a movie of the week, but I don't recall which one.
rgr
I also really hate it when things are clearly marketed to kids that should just be for adults. It confuses parents and seems really tricky. Like a ploy to get more box office money.
I haven't read any reviews in all fairness, but a movie called, "Grey Skies" just came out that says it does exactly what you just mentioned with aliens. Google it and watch the preview, you might be interested.
Hello out there in TV land. Let's talk about movies!!!
What do you wish was coming to a screen near you?
